Toyota Recalls 225K Camrys over Brake Issue

Nov. 24, 2021

Toyota has recalled 227,490 Camry units from the 2018 and 2019 model years.

Nov. 24, 2021—Toyota has recalled 227,490 Camry units from the 2018 and 2019 model years due to an issue that could lead to a sudden loss of braking assist.

According to an NHTSA post cited in a Car and Driver report, affected vehicles have a defective cap in the vehicle's mechanical vacuum pump. Premature wear can cause the cap to get stuck between the pump housing and rotating vane, which will cut off vacuum to the brake booster. The vehicle's brakes will still work but could become suddenly less effective.

The recall includes models built between Jan. 16, 2017, and Sept. 13, 2018. Notifications will be sent to owners starting in mid-December.
