Governor Greg Abbott has signed a bill into law that will require electric vehicle owners in Texas to pay fees for both registration and renewal, Brownwood News reports.

The bill, Senate Bill 505, will have EV owners pay a fee of $400 to register new EVs. An annual $200 fee will then be charged to renew the vehicle’s registration. The bill will not apply to electric motorcycles, mopeds, or autocycles.

The bill’s author has argued that it will make up for EV owners that don’t have to pay a gas tax, which helps contribute funds for state transportation projects. 

Criticism of the bill has cited that Texans pay less in gas taxes than what EV owners will be charged, with KVUE reporting that gas-powered vehicles typically have their fuel taxed at 20% a gallon and that Texas drivers pay an average of $130 annually in gas taxes.
