The American Petroleum Institute has extended the overlap period between the ILSAC GF-6 and the new ILSAC GF-7 engine oil standards, as shared in a recent statement.

In response to industry requests, API has extended the overlap period to Oct. 1, 2026, making it an 18-month overlap period instead of the customary one year.

The overlap period, part of the Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System, aims to provide oil marketers a fair transition by giving them time to adjust product lines and packaging without penalizing early adopters.
