Jan. 10, 2023—Some of the key states for electric vehicle battery manufacturing in the United States have been identified, according to CNBC.
The dominant players by the year 2030 will be Georgia, Michigan and Kentucky. CNBC says these three states "will be able to manufacture between 97 and 136 gigawatt hours’ worth of EV batteries per year by 2030, according to plans they have laid out."
But Kansas, Ohio, Tennessee and North Carolina have big plans as well. These states have a "planned capacity for between 46 and 97 gigawatt hours’ of EV battery production per year by 2030," according to CNBC.
The U.S. Department of Energy acknowledged all of this manufacturing capacity last week, which was based on a report from the Argonne National Laboratory in 2022. Nick Nigro, founder of Atlas Public Policy, told CNBC that the growth of battery manufacturing capacity by 2030 will be over 15 times what it is now and will help make the United States an EV leader.
Nigro went on to tell CNBC that this increased capacity will help the United States successfully meet the Biden Administration's goal of 50% EV sales by the year 2030.
