Jiffy Lube of Indiana is launching a program to keep track of and protect catalytic converters from being stolen, WISH-TV reports.

Catalytic converter thefts are becoming a pressing issue for drivers across the nation, with data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau showing that theft of catalytic converters has increased by 238% from 2020 to 2022.

“The minerals inside it are what pull the toxins out and that’s what makes the converter so valuable,” explained Lyann Hobbs, general manager of the Jiffy Lube at 10th Street and Girls School Road.

To counter this, the Catalytic Converter Identification Initiative was launched: a free service offered at all locations associated with Jiffy Lube of Indiana.

Through the program, drivers may have their vehicle identification number etched into their catalytic converter, as well as marking it with a brightly-colored stripe. This aims to not only help track catalytic converters after they’re taken but also to deter thieves from taking marked converters.

All Jiffy Lube of Indiana locations will be offering the service free of charge–no other purchases are needed.
